Sunderland's wretched end to the 2023-24 season continued with another defeat on the final day against Sheffield Wednesday who secured their Championship safety with a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Liam Palmer and Josh Windass scored unanswered goals in the first half as Sunderland registered an 11th defeat at home, the most of any team in the division, and their 22nd in total to finish 16th in the Championship table. Mike Dodds took his final game as interim head coach and admitted there will be plenty of reflection needed after a campaign which has gone so awry for Sunderland since the turning of the new year following the change of head coach.
