Sunderland's under-21s booked their spot in the Premier League 2 play-off final in dramatic style against Reading while the search for a new first team head coach continues to rumble on.

Ellis Taylor was the star of the show in Berkshire as Graeme Murty's academy side showed their mental resolve once again in the knockout phase of their Premier League 2 campaign to claw their way back into the game and force extra-time at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Taylor twice gave Sunderland the lead with two fabulous strikes as the 21-year-old continued to put himself in the shop window for any potential suitors with his contract at the Academy of Light coming to an end this summer.

The home side fought back, however, and scored two goals in as many minutes in the second half which left Sunderland trailing until the ninth minute of stoppage time where Taylor completed his hat-trick to force extra-time. Murty's team overcome West Ham United in the previous round on penalties after a 3-3 draw and looked set for their fate to be decided a similar way before Trey Ogunsuyi turned in an excellent strike from Caden Kelly's free kick in the 120th minute to book a date with Tottenham Hotspur over the Bank Holiday weekend in the final.

The progression of the academy this season further highlights the work being done at the Academy of Light at youth level - midfielder Chris Rigg one of the poster boys of the club's infrastructure. Rigg is preparing to compete for England's under-17s at the European Championship's in Cyprus before a decision will be made on his future with the 16-year-old eligible to sign his first professional deal next month.

Sunderland face strong competition to keep him on Wearside with Manchester United set to firm up their interest in the youngster with a substantial offer.

Joe Ramage and Scott Wilson reflect on both Rigg's future and the recent success of the club's academy in the latest We Are Sunderland briefing before providing the latest in the search for a new first team head coach.
